Breakfast in Chiang Mai! Temples and 80 cents worth of Bananas.

Is Chiang Mai the best place to retire cheap? Wandering around in the old town of Chiang Mai in the early morning I watch the city awake. Old ageless grannies are sweeping out the stoops in front on shops, some roosters are crowing and birds are everywhere. I love mornings here. The sun isn’t blistering hot yet and it’s very peaceful. The beautiful mornings are definitely one the reasons I’d consider Chiang Mai one of the best places to retire cheap.

After wandering around seeing some beautiful temples , I go for breakfast. Normally I’ve been hitting this local street stand restaurant around the corner from my hotel, but I wanted something different today. I decided I would just wander around until I found something.

Today I found a bustling local market which sells everything from live frogs to flip flops . It was immense, a farmers market meets a shopping mall. There were people buying bags of soup and fresh fruits for their day.

For breakfast, I had congee with pork , a skewer of BBQ chicken, something that looked like a Timbit on steroids and some bananas. Everything tasted so fresh. I really don’t know how they get their BBQ chicken so tender yet still 100% cooked. It literally was the best I’ve ever had. I normally don’t go for congee (which is a rice porridge) , but watching so many Thais stop at this one stand, I just had to try it. You could get the congee with a fresh egg in it for 10 cents more!

How much did this whole breakfast cost me? The whole thing? $2. It’s at time like these I love being in Thailand.

Pssst, the bananas in the the photo up top were 80 cents for all of them! That’s right the whole bunch. There was a sign that said 80 cents, so I figured  “Why not?”I didn’t realize it was 80 cents for all of them! (25 thb)
