Are there gyms in Thailand and are they filled with ladyboys? That’s something a reader of best countries to retire cheap blog asked me.

I got to check out a gym in Chiang Mai and I was pleasantly surprised. It was $2 (60 baht) for a drop in pass. Inside I was expecting tiny little Asian guys where they would hail me as their new king. I was wrong. It was full of other foreigners and a mix of Thais. The foreigners were universally all pretty fit. Curses! Although I guess if you’re dedicated enough to hit a gym in Thailand you’re serious about your physique.

The gym I found was in the old town of Chiang Mai called Go gym, and it had enough equipment to keep this gym rat happy.

Pumping techno blared over the sound system, and lots of equipment made for a no wait environment. I liked the fact that that they had a nice mix of free weights and machines.

Some things that made it seem more urban, and therefore cooler and more manly, was the fact that it’s in an old converted hanger and there’s no air conditioner. If they made a Rocky film in Asia this is where they’d film the scene where he “got the eye of the tiger” back.

No air con though means it’s hot hot hot! There’s fans but when it’s 40 degrees , those don’t necessarily cut it. Still maybe it was the blistering heat or the fact that I was in Thailand I had a great workout . It was like hot yoga vs normal yoga.

There were also areas for boxing or kickboxing! I didn’t really see anybody using them but they are there.

For people coming to Thailand and wanting to hit a gym here are some tips.

  1. Bring water. They didn’t have a fountain. You can buy water if needed.
  2. Bring a sweat rag. You’re going to get sweaty.
  3. Bring a towel to drop on equipment. I didn’t see anybody cleaning their stations. Speaking of sweaty…
