Roaming charges are the devil. It’s basically the phone company saying, screw you and your stupid loyalty and laziness. If you are going to travel, you or someone close to you is going to rack up a roaming charge. I have a relative who got a $400 charge because Facebook updated on her during vacation. There are 3 ways to avoid these charges.
You can just buy a new overseas burner phone. These are anywhere from $10(300 php) for a basic clamshell or $100 (3000 php) for a pretty good smart phone. These phones are unlocked and you just use it till you get home. Easy, simple and no hassles. Best of all as you’re travelling around trying to find the best countries to retire cheap you can use this phone all over the world.
Or you could buy a SIM card and put it into your current phone. This changes your number to this SIM card. You can use apps that allow you to receive calls from your old phone number. This method is easy, but you’ll want to make sure your phone is unlocked before you leave your home country. And do not lose your old SIM card. A friend of mine found that out the hard way.
The third way is to buy a pocket wifi device. This device is your own personal internet that you carry around with you turning on and off when needed. At about $40 (1200 php), you’ll use this device with your wifi to use Skype, Facebook Messenger or whatever app you want to call.
I hope this helps you save money while you’re looking for the best countries to retire cheap ! Happy travels!
